Before you light your bundle and begin smoke cleansing, it is important to make your intention. Whether it is to protect your home, remove the energy of people who visited, or create a sacred space for meditation. Clearly state your purpose, and begin to light your bundle.
It is necessary to use a heat resistant dish to hold the bundle while it is lit and to collect the ash. You can use a ceramic bowl, abalone shell, or any fireproof vessel. You can add sand, or dirt from your garden, to absorb the heat.
You can break off a small piece of your bundle to light, or light the end of the entire bundle until it catches flame. Gently blow out the flame, allowing it to smolder and begin to smoke.
Use your hand, feather, or leaf to gently direct the smoke over your body, around the perimeter of a room, around your altar, or in your doorways. Cleanse your crystals and items on your altar by holding them in the smoke, allowing it to move around the objects.
Be sure to extinguish your burn bundle safely. Press the lit end into your dish, preferably into the sand or dirt that you have in it. If it is still lit, try adding some drops of water to your dish and press the lit end into the wet area. Always be sure your burn bundle is completely out before leaving it unattended.
